Educating and Advancing - FOCIS Educational Opportunities
Advanced Course in Basic & Clinical Immunology
The newest addition to the FOCIS Educational Programs repertoire is the Advanced Course in Basic & Clinical Immunology, which recently concluded in Scottsdale, Arizona. This premier course featured talks from highly respected scientists and researchers and a sold-out attendance of 140 delegates.
The course provided an in-depth introduction to immunology with an emphasis on the basic biological underpinning of important human immunological diseases. Watch for communications announcing the 2007 course!
Basic Immunology for Clinicians: Update Twice in 2006
This day-long intensive course intended to update clinicians, clinical scientists and trainees about recent advances in immunology, with an emphasis on the biological basis of immunological diseases and therapies taught by Andrew Lichtman, MD, PhD, Brigham and Women's Hospital and Shiv Pillai, MD, PhD, Harvard Medical School will be offered at the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) State-of-the-Art Symposium, April 9, 2006. Another offering of the course will be held Wednesday, May 31, 2006 - San Francisco Marriott, California (immediately preceding FOCIS 2006). The course will be co-taught by its creators, Abul K. Abbas, MD, University of California - San Francisco and Hidde Ploegh, PhD, Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research.

A Meeting of the Minds
The 2nd Annual Network of Consortia (NOC) Meeting was held February 2-4 in Coconut Grove, Florida. The meeting offered a venue for individual consortium to hold their meetings as well as a day for all consortia to gather and discuss challenges that are common across disease-specific consortia.
One of the most highly lauded aspects of the meeting was the research updates given by a member of each represented consortium, briefing the attendees from other consortia on their most recent news.
The next NOC Meeting will be held in conjunction with FOCIS 2007 in San Diego, California. FOCIS welcomes consortia to gather and hold individual meetings and participate in a day and a half of collaborative workshops.

FOCIS welcomes the Karolinska Institute along with Director, Lars Klareskog, as the newest member of the FOCIS Centers of Excellence. The Karolinska Institute aims to advance the science and medicine of clinical immunology in a translational context by stimulating multidisciplinary interaction and educational programs. FOCIS and the FOCIS Centers of Excellence (FCE) welcome the newest addition to the FCE Network: Dr. Kiron Das. Dr. Das will be taking the FCE Director position previously held by Dr. Alice Gottlieb at Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center. We look forward to continued leadership and participation.
Giannina Gaslini Institute Announces New Training Programs
The FCE at the Giannina Gaslini Institute in Genoa, Italy, has recently added three new residential training programs in Immunology & Clinical Microbiology, Neonatal Intensive Care and Pediatric Rheumatology.
Classroom hours are interspersed with visits to Gaslini divisions and laboratories to give participants as much of a hands-on experience as possible, and participants are also encouraged to present on topics of their choice, thereby enhancing the training experience. Courses are accredited by the Italian CME Commission and generally receive the maximum number of credit hours possible, and all teaching/training contents (faculty lectures, presentations and complementary materials) are collected and subsequently made available on CD. Expanded 2006 ITN Scholars Program
The Immune Tolerance Network (ITN) announces the availability of up to two clinical research fellowships for its 2006 ITN Scholars Program. The program provides promising young investigators with intensive, hands-on training in the planning, design and implementation of clinical trials. Through close mentorship by ITN Clinical Directors, ITN Scholars develop an intimate knowledge of the scientific, medical and regulatory aspects of clinical research.
The Program is open to senior clinical fellows and junior medical faculty. Preferred candidates will have a serious interest in pursuing a career in clinical investigation and have a demonstrated interest in clinical immunology in the field of transplantation, autoimmunity or asthma/allergy.

New Research Grants for Novel Approaches to Lupus
The Lupus Research Institute - founded to support highly promising idea-driven novel approaches to discover the cause, improve treatment and cure lupus - invites applications for financial support starting November 2006 for basic and clinical Novel Research Projects relevant to Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.
Both established and new investigators may apply. Applicants should hold advanced degrees and be affiliated with institutions of higher learning in the United States. Grant applications are limited to six pages. Annual funding of up to $100,000 per year, for a term of up to three years, will be awarded for approved projects.
